In 2019, the town of Derby purchased the land located between the town office and the town garage. In 2022, the town requested Community Projects Funding from then-Representative Peter Welch. On June 25, Senator Peter Welch joined local leaders, members of Derby’s Senior Summer Day Camp, and community members to celebrate the groundbreaking of the Derby Park project, which will be built on the land. At the ceremony, Senator Welch said, “I was thinking how meaningful it is for us, at every stage in our life, to have two things: one is physical activity, and the other is relationships, friends.
The new community park will include a basketball court, a tennis court, and four pickleball courts, as well as walking trails, ten fitness stations, and picnic tables. Work on the project is scheduled to begin July 8.
