Brief History: Founded in 1782

General Area Info: Includes the village of Beecher Falls, located at the confluence of the Connecticut River and Halls Stream. Canaan is the most northern and most eastern township in Vermont being bordered by New Hampshire to the east and Quebec to the north.

Fun Facts:

  • Due to Quebecois ancestry, 26% of the residents speak French as their primary language, making the town one of New England’s “Little Canadas.” Was home to the Beecher Falls furniture factory, which opened in 1895 and was once the largest furniture factory east of Michigan.
