Town Name: Concord

Brief History: Chartered in 1780 to Reuben Jones and others. First settled by Simon Willard, a fur trader. It was named for Concord, Massachusetts.

General Area Info: Concord is the southernmost town in Essex County. It is bordered on the south by the Connecticut River, which serves as the state boundary with New Hampshire. The town includes North Concord, Miles Pond, East Concord, and Concord Corner.

  • The first “normal school” for teacher training was established in Concord in 1823.
