Want to make the most of Earth Day, but not sure how? Here are some suggestions from the Farmer’s Almanac on things you can do to help not just on Earth Day, but all year round.

Support Our Pollinators! Choose plants that attract butterflies and hummingbirds, as well as flowers that attract pollinating bees.

Clean Up Plastic in Your Neighborhood or Local Park. Recycle whatever plastics you can.

Swap out your kitchen and household products. Look for biodegradable cooking and cleaning products that do not use chemicals or plastic.

Plant a Tree! Trees capture carbon, cool overheated places, benefits agriculture, and support pollinators. Scroll down for details about the OCNRCD annual plant sale, which offers trees, bushes, and shrubs.

Use Wildflowers and Native Plants. Indigenous species are beautiful and attract native and beneficial insects that improve pest control and pollination.

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle in the Garden. Buy topsoil, mulch, compost, or other materials in bulk. Reuse, recycle, or return old plastic pots and trays. Use biodegradable pots that you can plant right into the ground.

Stop Pesticide and Chemical Use in the Garden. If your soil is nutrient-rich with organic matter, your plants will thrive.

Conserve Water! Water your garden at soil level and avoid overwatering your plants. You can also harvest rainwater to use in the garden.

Think About Your Diet! How do we avoid food waste in our own lives (and save money)? One way is to care about your “foodprint,” which is the result of everything that it takes to get your food from the farm to your plate.

Get Kids Involved! Pass down a love of nature and plants to kids.
