Seymour, the second largest lake all encompassed in Vermont, has an area of 1,769 acres and a depth of 167 feet. This clean spring- fed lake is in the quaint town of Morgan. In early spring, common loons will begin to appear on the lake and reside here through late fall, and keep your eye out for the Seymour Lake Eagles, K2 and his spouse. Each year in July, the Seymour Lake Association Boat Parade is enjoyed equally by boaters and spectators along the shoreline. The lake’s shoreline is incredibly sandy, and the ½-mile-long public beach is an ideal spot to spend a sunny summer day. The public boat launch is staffed by volunteers who check every boat that enters the lake to preserve what is considered one of the cleanest lakes in the country. And, as is the case with all the lakes in the Northeast Kingdom, the boat traffic is minimal, which allows for a very relaxing day on the water. The fishing is excellent, and anglers may discover brown trout, burbot, chain pickerel, lake trout, landlocked salmon, rainbow smelt, smallmouth bass, or yellow perch on the end of the line.

Around the lake is a blend of seasonal cottages and camps, as well as year-round homes and the famous Camp Winape, which is no longer in operation. You can stock up on many provisions and grab a tasty bite to eat at the Morgan Country Store & Café. In nearby Derby, Newport, and Island Pond you’ll find a variety of shopping and dining options. The Northwoods Stewardship Center, whose Conservation Corps works to maintain many area hiking trails, offers hiking, Nordic ski and snowshoe trails at its campus in Island Pond. Morgan is equidistant from Burke Mountain and Jay Peak for skiing and riding, or hop onto the VAST snowmobile trail, which is easily accessible in town.
